With hand snakes, these are rotated using a handle to move the snake down a drain or pipe. For example, a toilet snake is only for the toilet unit itself. If you break the toilet off its wax seal, you normally expose a 3 inch pipe. You would use a medium snake to access this line.
Power Snakes are an electric motor that rotates the cage of the snake. You still have to feed it into a pipe to the obstruction, and move it in and out until it clears the backup.
